Dolores Lebrón Sotomayor , known as Lolita Lebrón ( Pezuela , November 19, 1919 1 – San Juan , August 1, 2010 2 ), was a Puerto Rican independence activist . In 1954, under her command, a group of nationalists attacked the United States House of Representatives as a way to call attention to and demand the colonial status of Puerto Rico. Lebrón was arrested and served 24 years in prison, until she was released by a pardon from President Jimmy Carter .
