Lupe Victoria Yolí Raymond was born in Santiago de Cuba in December 1939. From a young age she had the ambition to be a singer, but like Celia Cruz , she studied to be a teacher before launching her career in Havana's nightclubs with Los Tropicuba, a trio she was part of with her first husband .
Already as a soloist and before emigrating to the United States in 1962, La Lupe caused a sensation in Cuba for two reasons: first, the obvious attributes of her voice, which shone with equal brilliance in torrid boleros and joyful guarachas. Second, for her peculiar habit of entering into a kind of trance on stage.
“Overnight, she became a storm of passion for the Cuban public,” Moreno-Velázquez explains. “On stage, La Lupe would tear off her wig, attack the pianist and throw her jewelry at the crowd. This madness was part of her ritual.”
